1-on-1 help to address barriers

in your academic writing process

I'm Ariana Brown, and I help assistant and adjunct professors develop the skills required to complete daunting academic writing projects. As a novelist, poet, librarian, and creative writing teacher for the last fifteen years, I've helped writers of all backgrounds build sustainable writing practices with lessons I've learned myself. In the process, I've learned that much of what we call "writer's block" is fueled by challenges that can be addressed, with a little compassion and a lot of practical, neurodivergent-friendly tools.

Work With Me

Writing is hard work. Most people struggle to make time to write and even fewer actually feel like their writing process works for them. Over the last decade and a half working 1-on-1 with writers of all backgrounds, I've noticed some common obstacles that get in the way of creating the work you want to create:

Maybe you feel like an impostor in academic spaces and constantly second-guess your talent, worth, or ability to deliver on your innumerable projects...

Maybe you don't know where to start because you struggle with task initiation, organizing your notes, navigating your neurodivergence, or an extremely busy schedule...

Maybe you listen to your inner critic who berates you for not being able to write perfectly polished writing on the first go...

so you don't end up writing very much at all. Whatever the reason, I'm here to help address obstacles in your academic writing practice so you can return the page feeling joyful, focused, and prepared to tackle any writing project you dream into existence.

You're not bad at writingyou just need a mentor.

Here's where I come in

A shame-free way to ensure your writing needs are met

I believe everyone could use a mentor to help us take a clear look at our writing practices and identify areas we can strengthen. When you sign up for a 1-on-1 consultation, you pick a time that works for your schedule for us to have a 90 min video chat about what's going on in your life and how it's impacting your writing practice. You'll have my full attention to share your writing frustrations, challenges, and dreams, and then we'll work together to create a plan to address them. This is a shame-free, disability-friendly conversation rooted in my background of ethnic studies, librarianship, and the idea that everyone deserves to have a fulfilling creative life.

This is ideal for...

  • Assistant and adjunct professors seeking support with the decision making process of their writing practice
  • Academics who feel overwhelmed and underprepared for the pace of tenure-track life
  • Academics trying to meet tenure goals by writing articles or writing a book
  • Academics who struggle with writer's block
  • Academics seeking support with goal-setting and creating/executing a plan to reach their goals
  • Academics seeking support with managing neurodivergence while working on writing projects

This is not ideal for...

  • Postdocs, graduate or undergraduate students
  • Anyone trying to complete a dissertation or thesis
  • Academics seeking feedback or edits on their writing projects

Some of the reasons people work with me

  • To create a sustainable research, writing, and study practice that accommodates your neurodivergence

  • To create an action plan to tackle your academic writing projects

  • To develop a writing practice with compassionate guidance rooted in anti-capitalist principles

  • To prevent burnout while still seeing your many academic writing projects through to the finish line

Why this approach?

Most of the writing advice available online and circulating in academic spaces isn't actually helpful for most people. If you are a person of color, LGBTQIA+, working class, neurodivergent, abolitionist, community organizer, first-generation college student, or simply someone who struggles to write every day, you might find yourself underrepresented or unwelcome in traditional academic spaces. In these cases, you may be asking yourself: if everyone else can do it, then what is wrong with me?

The capitalist urgency to write the most groundbreaking work anyone has ever seen, to make yourself competitive in the academic world on a timeline that neglects your body's needs actually doesn't work for anyone. Most of the people I work with have stepped a toe in the academic world and found it to be unsatisfying in some way.

My 1-on-1 services take into account your unique needs, challenge cycles of shame and self-doubt, and encourage you to take your learning into your own hands. You can learn to write in a way that feels fulfilling and exciting, that nurtures your inner child without giving up on your dreams.

In our work together, I'll draw on my academic background in ethnic studies, librarianship, and creative writing to customize a writing plan that works for you, without the need to conform to a harsh, discipline-driven mindset.

What my mentees say about the experience

Headshot of Karimi Ndwiga, a dark skinned Black person with long braids, a colorful bracelet, and a crisp white button down.
Aída Guhlincozzi

Assistant Prof. of Geography at University of Missouri

"Ariana's mentorship was thorough, detailed, and guided. There was a really clear, effective solutions-based approach to the mentorship, where Ariana made sure to listen to what my concerns and struggles were, and then could directly isolate or identify a target area to structurally address and problem-solve towards.

As a result of my mentorship with Ariana, I have identified a clear approach for how to improve my writing sustainability. Specifically, I was able to write/co-write and submit four separate grants in 5 months. I was able to identify when I was facing writing blocks, mild burnout, and immediately apply my tools and plans to address it. And then I submitted a manuscript for publication! I'm also able to now even consider moving into new writing areas with confidence because of the practices I have built and the support Ariana has given me!"
